Coranderrk Aboriginal Reserve was officially gazetted in 1863

The Victorian government established the reserve to provide a place for Aboriginal people, particularly the Kulin clans, to live and work.
The reserve was initially 2,300 acres and later expanded.

Here's a more detailed look at the establishment of Coranderrk:
  • In 1863, about 40 people from various Kulin clans moved to the reserve .

  • A notice in the Victoria's Government Gazette announced the "temporary reservation" of 2,300 acres for the Coranderrk Aboriginal Station in June 1863 .

  • The reserve was later expanded to 4,850 acres in 1866 .

  • Coranderrk became Victoria's largest reserve and a thriving farming community .

  • The reserve was managed by John Green, who fostered a culture of self-governance among the residents .

  • Coranderrk faced threats of closure and eventually closed in 1924 .
